Local Restaurant Spotlight: The Toasted Yolk Cafe

Toasted Yolk Cafe rolls out a new limited-time Crawfish Menu and it is Great!

Toasted Yolk explains their philosophy in their mission statement as “We only use the highest quality products, and make things from scratch daily.” This certainly proved true on my most recent visit to this restaurant, when I invited a few friends to join me for a sampling of Toasted Yolk’s new menu offerings.

“Chris Milton and Mathew DeMott opened the first Toasted Yolk Café in 2010. The mission was to provide a unique breakfast and lunch experience that was better than anything else they could find. To achieve that goal, the Toasted Yolk curated chef-inspired menus full of fresh, mouth-watering takes on our favorite foods. We paired them up with delicious juices, coffee creations, and hair-of-the-dog cocktails in a restaurant where fun was the priority.”

The new crawfish menu lives up to this statement from their mission, because everything we tried from the new menu is fresh, innovative, and fantastic, especially the two breakfast stars.

Bourbon Street Arnold – Toasted Yolk’s Cafe take on a New Orleans style Arnold – Hand battered and lightly fried crawfish tails served on top of a slice of crusty bread and sliced tomatoes, topped with two eggs and covered in a housemade remoulade sauce.

I am a lover of creative Benedicts, and this one is one of the best I have had in a long while. The Bourbon Saint Arnold here at Toasted Yolk could go head to head with some of the best small New Orleans cafes and chefs, a symphony of flavors and textures in every bite. The hashbrown casserole is a must-order side and side of fresh fruit makes this a perfect dish from start to finish.

Zydeco Omelette – 4 egg omelette stuffed with CRAWFISH tails, onions, bell peppers, and jalapenos with cheddar cheese and topped with our house-made remoulade sauce.

One hearty omelette with bunches of fresh crawfish tails and the remoulade sauce could have been cooked by any well known Cajun Chef.  Crawfish for breakfast? Oh, yes! We are all fans.

Mardi Gras Poboy – Hand battered and lightly fried crawfish tails nestled in a crusty bread loaf with sliced tomato and lettuce and our own house-made remoulade sauce.

I would have never thought that we could get a New Orleans-style crawfish Poboy of this caliber at a place that is mainly known for killer breakfast fare. The crawfish tails were insanely good, seasoned, crispy, and not at all greasy. The bread was crusty and was the texture of a truly great po’boy bread.

Tails + Grits featuring creamy crawfish grits topped with crawfish tails, onions, bell peppers, and jalapenos with cheddar cheese smothered with housemade creole sauce served with toasted crusty bread.

Cheesy grits were fantastic, just the right amount of seasonings and spice in this beautifully crafted dish.

Dessert was the warm Birthday Cake Donut Holes – perfectly baked and stuffed with a birthday cake-flavored filling. Served warm and drizzled with vanilla frosting and topped with sprinkles!

We decided to try a couple of cocktails since it was brunch time, and had the Bloody Mary and the featured Cocktail with the Crawfish menu the Hurricane.

We all agreed, we want to come back for more and we are hoping that Toasted Yolk will roll a crawfish menu out every year when crawfish season rolls around. If I had to choose a favorite, the Bourbon Street Arnold for breakfast and the Mardi Gras Poboy for lunch, but the whole Crawfish menu is stellar.
